Hmmm I'd thought along the same lines as CB about him falling inwards.
The building is 40 feet in length rather than high?
The building is 40 feet in height, but buried in the ground?
He falls into a swimming pool?
He has a parachute/flying wing/lots of helium balloons?
He is attached by a rope?
He is dead and has no skin to be scratched?
A giant bird swoops down and gently catches him?
He is a spider-man?
He is in the Matrix?

He is a potato, c'mon grif!
Did he fall through the window into the building?
Did he fall out the window onto a platform or roof or roof garden?

Re: LATERAL PUZZLES AND RIDDLES
This one is pretty easy.
There was a black city where everything was black. One day, a black man was driving in his black car down a black road when a black dog ran across the black road. Swiftly, the black man swerved round the black dog, missing it. If everything is black, then how did the black man see the black dog thus not running him over?

Re: LATERAL PUZZLES AND RIDDLES
A man lives on the twelfth floor of an apartment building. Every morning he takes the elevator down to the lobby and leaves the building. In the evening, he gets into the elevator, and, if there is someone else in the elevator -- or if it was raining that day -- he goes back to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes to the tenth floor and walks up two flights of stairs to his apartment.
Why?

The elevator has room for one only and is not waterproof. The elevator is also under maitenence on the 11th floor, thus it being only able to reach floor 10.

Re: LATERAL PUZZLES AND RIDDLES
The man is a midget. He can't reach the upper elevator buttons, but he can ask people to push them for him. He can also push them with his umbrella. I've usually heard this stated with more details: "Every morning he wakes up, gets dressed, eats, goes to the elevator..." In the other direction, for a shorter problem statement, leave out the "someone else in the elevator" and "if it was raining" parts, and just say on his return to the building he always goes to the tenth floor. Ron Carter suggests a nice red herring: the man lives on the 13th floor of the building.

Monty hall problem
After winning a gameshow you re given the choice of three doors. Behind one is a brand new car, behind the other two are goats. Lets assume you dont want the goats.
You pick a door, after you make your choice the host (who knows what is behind each door) opens one of the doors you didnt choose, to reveal a goat. He then asks you if you wish to change your choice from the door you picked initialy to the remaining door. Should you change and why?

the car can be in door 1, 2 or 3 so the possible arrangements would be:
car, goat, goat
goat, car, goat
goat, goat, car
Assume you pick the same door each time (the 1st one) so in the first scenario, changing would give you a GOAT.
In the second scenario, changing would give you a CAR.
In the third scenario, changing would give you a CAR.
So 2 out of 3 times you get a car if you change.

Re: LATERAL PUZZLES AND RIDDLES
You're right, though yourt wording/logic is a bit off
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Hall_problem for proofs and stuff
Best way ro phraze it is you either picked, with your first choice, a car, goat one, or goat two
if you picked the car then swithcing nets you a goat
if you picked either goat switching gets you a car
Switching is to your advantage 2/3 times.

Re: LATERAL PUZZLES AND RIDDLES
Ok, let me try and explain this as simply as possible
We're going to go through a game making ALL POSSIBLE CHOICES.
In this particular game door one is the car and doors two and three are the goats.
Player that switches- If this player picks door 1 then door 2 or 3 is revealed to have a goat behind it, when they switch they just switch to the other goat door and loose
If this player picks door 2 then door 3 is revealed to have a goat behind it, when they switch they will switch to door 1, and win
If this player picks door 3 then door 2 is revealed to have a goat behind it, when they switch they will switch to door 1 and win.
The switching player wins two out of the three possible games.
Player that doesn't switch- If they pick door 1, they get the car, stick with it and win
If they pick door 2, they get a goat
If they pick door 3, they get a goat
The non switching player only wins 1/3 times

Re: LATERAL PUZZLES AND RIDDLES
Considering that one was difficult for some to understand, here's a similar but more simple one.
You have just died and you are in a room, there are two doors in the room. One of the doors leads to heaven, one of the doors leads to hell. There is one person guarding each door, one of the people will always tell a lie, and one of the people will always tell the truth, but you do not know which one is going to tell the truth. You can only ask ONE question, what do you ask and to whom do you ask it?

"Does this door lead to heaven?" to the man guarding the heaven door. God would not hire a guard that lies as lying is a sin.

Re: LATERAL PUZZLES AND RIDDLES
Almost, close enough I suppose.
But yeah, you ask one of the guards what the other guard would say if you asked him whether or not his door was the door to heaven. The liar will lie and the truer will truth so the answer will always be the same(so the person telling the truth would say the other person would say his door was to hell, and the person that lies would say the other person would say his door was to hell). Then you just go through the other door.
