Terry Pratchett- I can only speak for the discworld series but pretty much every single one of them is fantastic. The baisic premise is the modern world viewed through a fantasy lense. In the start it's more fantasy but over time it tackles issues such as religious biggotry, advancing technology, multiculturalism etc.

The issues feel real because the world is so well detailed, but it stops short of being preachy because the books are so damn funny.

You can also start reading virtualy any book without reading the previous ones. Each character is introduced with enough detail to make a new reader familiar with them and jog the memory of a return customer.

Ok, everyone elses turn, otherwise jonny might close the forum Sad

Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

A fantastic read, and extremely funny Smile

Whenever I inspect the content of the insides of a certain book, I must conclude that it contains too many letters. I blame the internet for this.

When I used to read fiction, I thought this - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sir_Fred_Hoyle#Science_fiction - was pretty epic. His work just sucks you in and you can't stop reading.

First 3/4 books are really good, then it all goes to shit. GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN. Or just tell yourself they all die on the train (you'll know it when you get to it) and stop reading.

Or just read the whole thing w/e

The Tommyknockers is a creepy book.

'It' Is a good read, as is 'Pet Sematary'.

I also enjoyed a couple of his more recent books - 'Cell' and 'Under the Dome'

I also enjoy Michael Crichton books.

Can't believe I found this here - it's just about the first book my mother ever read me as a youngster - think we still have the copy somewhere Smile

Harry Potter series were great to read as a youngster, with books coming out pretty much the same year as I was in!
I like Stephen King and Terry Pratchett too, mostly because of my Dad who owns pretty much every book by them!

And other than the occasional autobiography, then I don't read anything else

Henry Miller means more to me as a writer than pretty much any other author, musician or artist I've ever come across. Tropic of Cancer is as good a place to start as any.

In terms of more modern authors, I'm still madly in love with Jeanette Winterson.

I recommend Wilt's serie, written by Tom Sharpe.

This books made me crying with laughter.

I also recommend two spanish writters, surely not as well known in UK as in Spain:

Ildefonso Falcones, and Carlos Ruiz Zafón.
